1. Hypervigilance

Simply growing up in an environment of active addiction is to live on tenterhooks, waiting for the next drama and, in order to survive, the child must become hypervigilant. This hypervigilance is required to survive such a volatile environment and is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As someone gets older, this sensation is something that some describe as being psychic, by others as being especially intuitive or being able to read people. But as they engage in the therapeutic work, they begin to realise that this skill has been born of a need to survive. They have learned to read the parent from a tip of the shoulder, a change in tone, a twitch of brow and crucially they had learned how to adjust so as not to inflame anything.
